Choosing God's Instructions Over Cultural Expectations
Choosing God's Instructions Over Cultural Expectations
When John was born, everyone assumed he would be named after his father, Zechariah, following cultural tradition. Yet, Elizabeth firmly declared his name would be John, a name given by divine instruction. Zechariah, still unable to speak, confirmed this on a tablet, demonstrating that God's word takes precedence over societal norms. Delaying obedience because we seek human approval can hinder God's plan. True freedom comes when we align our will with God's clear commands.
Luke 1:59-63 (KJV): “And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.”
Reflection: Is there an area in your life where cultural expectations or the opinions of others are causing you to delay obedience to something God has clearly instructed you to do? What would it look like to firmly declare God's instruction in that area?
