A Voice in the Synagogue 6/30

 A Voice in the Synagogue

The synagogue in Capernaum was packed. Families were quiet, listening to Jesus teach. Then a voice erupted from the congregation. It was not a voice of worship. It was a dark, angry cry. A man with an unclean spirit began to shout. He was in the synagogue, surrounded by religion and Scripture, yet still in bondage.

Religion could not fix him. Tradition and ceremony could not set him free. They could only modify his behavior. Darkness can tolerate religion. But darkness cannot tolerate the presence of Jesus Christ. The moment Jesus entered the room, the demon became uncomfortable and had to cry out.

You may be surrounded by religious activity. You may know the right words and practices. But religion cannot transform a heart. Only a personal encounter with Jesus does that. Are you relying on religious tradition, or on Christ Himself for your freedom?

“And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.” (Luke 4:33-34, KJV)

Prayer: Confess any area where you have trusted in religion rather than in Christ.

Challenge: Identify one religious habit you do and ask Jesus to make it a genuine act of worship.
