The Man at the Wedding Feast 10/5

The Man at the Wedding Feast

The religious leaders watched the meal at Levi’s house. They saw the plates passing and heard the conversations. They noted that Jesus’ disciples were eating and drinking. This did not fit their expectations of spiritual behavior. They confronted Jesus about it. They had a religious measuring stick, and the disciples were not measuring up. They were inspecting the plates but missing the Savior.

These men were like a guest who walks into a wedding and demands everyone act like they are at a funeral. They could see the food but missed the meaning of the moment. They knew what was wrong in the world but failed to recognize what was happening right in front of them. The presence of Jesus Himself was the reason for the feast.

Many of us can become attached to what we expect church to look like. We know our seat and our songs. We notice if a chair is moved three inches. But we can overlook the person God brought here for help. We can inspect what makes us uncomfortable and miss the work God is doing. Are you more focused on the routine of religion than on the presence of the Savior?

“And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?” (Luke 5:33)

Prayer: Ask God to open your eyes to see His work around you today, especially in unexpected people and places.

Challenge: Intentionally greet and learn the name of one person at church this week you do not already know.
